There’s a common misconception that there are only two options for seniors with medical needs—living in a senior care facility or with family. For older adults who are living on a fixed income, this limited list may drop down to one option, since living in a nursing home or assisted living home can become expensive. The average cost of a month in a nursing home in Michigan is estimated to be nearly $10,000 in 2022 (see table on page 13).
However, when it comes to the second half of life, there are more options available than many people think. In fact, nowadays, it’s entirely plausible for a senior with medical needs and a fixed income to age in place.
What Does “Aging in Place” Mean?
Well, according to Senior Living, aging in place is “when a person lives and ages in their residence of choice, for as long as they are able to.” Aging in place often also includes in-home healthcare and support, which is designed to adapt as the person’s needs change or increase.
In short, aging in place is an alternative to moving into a senior living facility. Elderly people can stay in their homes and still receive the level of care they need to live a happy, healthy life.

Aging in place is by no means a new method of care for older adults, but it is one that can be overlooked. Many people dismiss it altogether because they assume it is too expensive to consider. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Here at LifeCircles, we know and believe wholeheartedly that living at home can make all the difference for older adults. Our program is designed to provide comprehensive care within a participant’s residence, and in some cases, that care is completely free.
In fact, LifeCircles is designed specifically to address common challenges that seniors and family members face. Check out the infographic below to see a few examples of how LifeCircles alleviates those stressors.
Top Reasons to Age in Place
Many people feel the most comfortable when they’re at home. That’s why moves can be stressful, and stress can take a huge toll on elderly adults. Aging at home empowers seniors to:
- Remain in an environment they love
- Maintain their independence longer with familiar surroundings and routines
- Support their autonomy
- Continue feeling connected to their community and pride in their home
- Receive care in a comfortable, familiar environment
- Welcome friends and family into their homes without the need for visiting hours, or other complicated rules (thanks COVID)
